Well I have figured out how to high speed sync an Olympus E3 and studio lights. FP as it is known in Olympus terms in high speed sync. It is a function where the shutter is times with a flickering burst of light from the on camera flash. Namely an FL50R or the FL36R these flash give you full auto TTL HSS function when the flas is placed on camera and you input the correct settings.

What happens if you do not have proper sync speeds with a flash is called, “Banding”. A black line in your image where the second curtain is closing. Basically when you dial a fast shutter speed there is just a slit where the sensor is being exposed to light. If you don’t have a speed-light that can do HSS then you have banding and you are limited to the max sync speed of your camera. Most modern dlsr have a 1/250 of a second sync. Well that is not fast enough to freeze action. I say 1/500 is more like it to avoid motion blur. There are little Gems like the Nikon D70s that will sync to max shutter speed, but this is a function of the way that shutter works, well in that case lack of a shutter. That camera just turns on and off the sensor to achieve a shutter speed!

Back to my little HSS trick. You must have a Oly flash, a 50r or 36r. This is what you must do. Mount the flash and enter FP manual mode, take a picture at 500 or 1000th of a second. Remember flash must be in MANUAL MODE FP. Take any picture, then trun off the flash. Next place your wireless trigger on the hot shoe and you got it! Until you turn the camera of you can sync at any speeds with any flash at any duration. See my Speedotron 805 and 202vf head at 1/8000th using an RPS Studio budget wireless trigger! Simply awesome!
