Things to know when getting started in Photoshop

Photoshop CS6

Hi and welcome to my blog. Today I want to share a few things you may want to know if you are just starting to work with Photoshop.  So many times, when I am browsing through the inter-webs, I see information and tutorials for programs like Photoshop, that show only the latest and greatest features.  Where does this leave the people that are just starting out?  They have to sift through a ton of information just to find a topic that might touch on the basics.  So, I am going to start doing a series of videos to help some of the new photographers that might want to play with their photos inside Photoshop.

These videos might target the beginner to Photoshop, however, I find new ways to do something all the time when watching others work with the program.  You will quickly learn when working inside Photoshop ,there are often 5 or 6 ways to do the same exact thing.  So does it mean one way or the other is wrong?  I say no, it’s all about personal preference.  There is a catch, you need to know all of the various ways to accomplish the same task, only then you can find which way works best for you.  So what I am saying is, these beginner videos might be of some help to the seasoned user.

As a beginner to Photoshop, you will need to learn how to open images. Just to let you know, the way I used to open images, when I first started, is different than how I open them now.  Then once you have an image open, you will need to learn the basic tools that I call the “Big Three”.  They are Selections, Layers, and Adjustment layers.  I will cover them all in upcoming videos but in the video below, I only touch a couple.  In this post, I simply want to give you a feel of what is going on.

In the video below, I will show you how to open a photo, and perform some quick ways to make a selections.  I’ll also tell you about a safety tip that will save you from certain disaster.  I want to thank you for taking time to visit my blog today. I hope you have a great day. Thomas Shue

Thanks for this, Tom! I’ve been a light user of Photoshop for several years (I do more work in Lightroom), but I picked up some great tips from watching the video. Helpful as always!
