Lightroom and Photoshop Selections and Color Range

Hi, and welcome to my blog.  Today I am offering another video tutorial on Lightroom and Photoshop.  Many have asked, why do I need Lightroom and Photoshop?  Well, you don’t need anything, over the other, as many people make due with Bridge, ACR, or Gimp, for example.  With that said, if you are serious about photography, you might want to consider Lightroom and Photoshop a package deal. Lightroom is incredible and I use it 100% of the time to handle all of my images, however, there are some things that Lightroom can’t do.

If I need to do image specific manipulations, I work in Photoshop.  Photoshop is loaded with tools that make short work of editing images.  Making a specific selection is one of the things that Photoshop is unsurpassed in.  One of the older and overlooked ways to make a selection in Photoshop is via Color Range.  I use CS6, as it has been revamped, but Color Range has been in Photoshop for a very long time.

While sitting and waiting to teach my portion of a workshop yesterday, I watched a presentation by my friend, Rich Harrington, where he covered the use of many features in Photoshop.  Well, he reminded me of the, often overlooked, Color Range selection option.  So without any further delay I offer this video.

  1. Please remember this video is not intended to be definitive I am not claiming this video is the ONLY way or even the BEST way to make selections. I am merely offering my thoughts on making selections and offer this video only because it might be helpful to someone.
